Production Logs for a fishing company - Buck Wild Fishing Company
Overview
Buck Wild Fishing Company – a fishing company operating in Asia. The company is engaged in fishing and organizing fishing tours.

Industry: Fishing production
Challenges
Fishing in natural conditions is a very unstable process. Despite the apparent simplicity and «freeness» of fish, ensuring a constant catch is quite difficult, since the location of fish is influenced by many factors such as:
- Temperature
- Current
- Tides/ebbs
- Lunar cycles
- Pressure
- Waves
- Predators
- Water area
- Etc
And some single rule or pattern that would guarantee the catch – simply does not exist. Everything comes down to the captain's experience and his intuition based on it. Therefore the catch – is not guaranteed.
On the other hand – any vessel going to sea – is a guaranteed expense - fuel, equipment depreciation, gear and bait.
Solution
The company Buck Wild Fishing Company decided not to rely on the experience and intuition of individual captains, but to make a unified «knowledge base» and to form summary catch statistics across all vessels and outings for more effective decision-making. In essence, the principle «two heads are better than one» was taken as the foundation.
All captains, in addition to operational communications among themselves to understand where «here and now» there is fish, began to enter into the logs the results of each day:
- Territory
- Weather (temperature, pressure, sunniness, etc)
- Volume of catch by fish species
- Time

On the other hand they also built up operational accounting:
- Engine hours
- Volume of fuel and lubricants consumption
- Types of maintenance and costs for them

It is worth noting here that filling logs «at sea» by captains at computers – seems hardly realistic. Therefore the voice input function and robot call-outs (if they are in the cellular network zone) significantly increased the quality of data collection.
Results
Increase in catch volume up to 30%
After a certain amount of time and collection of statistics the company began to form such statistical dashboards:

Based on the data of the reports the company's performance grew by 30% thanks to more justified decisions on where and when and how to fish. As well as the decision not to go out to sea so as not to waste fuel and lubricants with a low probability of catch.
Cost reduction up to 15%
Production accounting – is always a discipline that leads to cost reduction. Control over fuel and lubricants consumption and over maintenance costs allowed Buck Wild Fishing Company to reduce its costs up to 15% per year.
