What a good shift handover process includes

Safety experts’ guidance on shift handover converges on the same shape: a written or digital record plus a two-way, face-to-face conversation. A complete handover covers four things:

  1. What happened — events, downtime, deviations, in order and with times.
  2. Current state — what’s running, what’s down, what’s in an abnormal lineup; open permits and bypassed safety systems.
  3. Open items — unfinished work, pending decisions, contractors still on site: everything the next shift inherits.
  4. Confirmation — the incoming shift reads the records, asks questions, and takes over knowingly.
